An Introduction to How We Use Algebra

A great article, "13 Examples of Algebra in Everyday Life," that I was reading said something very beneficial: "Just because we do not see any “X” or “Y” does not mean that algebra has failed to prove its existence; still, the real-life examples of algebra are uncountable." Algebra is used in the business realm to calculate things like profit and loss. If you go to college, algebra is needed in almost every field of study. Obviously, algebra is used in physics and chemistry. However, it is also used in computer science because most algorithms are based on algebra. When you want your architectural plan or your artwork to be the exact right size, you need algebra to help you calculate that.

Besides us deliberately using algebra, we use it without knowing. At night, when I'm setting my alarm for the morning, I often think of my morning routine so I set my alarm with enough time to get ready. For example, I know it usually takes me 15 minutes to shower, a maximum of 15 minutes to pick out an outfit, 15 minutes to do my skincare and brush my teeth, 15 minutes for hair and makeup, and 15 minutes right off the bat to actually get out of bed. My school is 35 minutes away, but I like to have 10 minutes to spare. My school starts at 8 AM, so I know I have to leave my house by 7:15 AM. Therefore, I set my alarm for 6 AM.

The algebraic equations I use to calculate what time to set my alarm could be modeled by saying:

timetoshower + timetopickanoutfit + timetodoskincare + timeforhairandmakeup + timetogetoutofbed = morningroutinetime

Then, I take morningroutinetime and input it into a different equation, saying:

timeschoolstarts - timetospare - morningroutinetime = timealarmshouldbeset

That's it for now! Keep checking back for more :)
